The selection process includes:

  1. The identification of needed materials.
  2. The evaluation of materials.
  3. The comparison of materials.
  4. The selection of materials to be purchased.
  5. The acquisition of selected materials

SCHOOL OBJECTIVES FOR SELECTION

In selecting materials for inclusion in the collection, consideration is given to the needs of the school curriculum as a whole and needs of the individual student. The needs of the student are met by:
  • Providing materials that support the school curriculum and take into consideration the varying interests and abilities of middle grade students.
  • Providing instruction that will enable the student to acquire the ability to use the media materials and equipment.
  • Developing an appreciation for the various types of literature.
  • Assisting the student in developing critical judgement in the selection and evaluation of the media.
  • Providing materials that will teach the student to evaluate and form an independent conclusion.
  • Encourage media center use that will promote lifelong learning.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELECTION OF MATERIALS

The media advisory committee, team leaders and the lead teacher assist in the evaluation, comparison and selection of materials for use and purchase. The media coordinator is responsible for identifying materials to be considered, providing expertise in evaluating those materials, coordinating the selection process, ensuring balance within the collection, making final purchase decisions, and acquisition of selected materials.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The overall purpose of the material; its direct relationship to the instructional objectives and curriculum of Bethel Middle School, is very important in the selection process. The following criteria is considered:

  • The reliability, accuracy and authenticity of the material.
  • The treatment of the subject matter is clear, skillful, well organized and unbiased.
  • The material is constructed so that it is durable, manageable and attractive.
  • The possible individual and group/classroom uses of the material.
